Question re: CW Remove Overlap/Intersections

Question: I'm evaluating Curveworks (that I downloaded yesterday) under WinXP SP 3 64-bit with 8 GB of RAM and using CorelDRAW X4. I'm having problems getting Remove Overlap and Remove Intersections to work (I'm pretty sure it's "operator error...")

I draw two overlapping circles in the same layer (mimicking the arrangement in the documentation), I marquee select both of them and convert them to curves.

But when I try to Remove Intersections, CW announces "No Intersections Found."

Is there something else that I need to do?
