Default help on external linked bitmaps desparatly needed!

hi there...

I'm really in need of help...

I have to do frequently presentations of my 3d renderings, I layout them in Corel12, export them to pdf for beeing seen by clients.

my problem is: during a project these renders are changed a lot of times.
so i link my my bitmaps to the .cdr document-
but its horrible to use!!!!

corel doesn't recognise if a file is overwritten, if I burn everything on a cd, I have to update every single image, I can't tell corel to search in one specific folder

the preview of the linked images is so lowRes that i see only pixels as in big as in old c64 times.

linking by OPI creates huge files, as if corel would store the file within the cdr file.
and its not updating automatically neither, but preview is perfect..

please show me that I'm doing wrong, and not that i have to use quark for these operations!

r'gards

afaik, CorelDRAW updates links before printing, so you can simulate printing, there are also other operations which update links automatically, look in built-in corelDRAW help, searching for "linking"

set dpi to 72 or less for your images in 3D-program, so CorelDRAW will recalculate them to its standard 46 dpi (or smth like that) without visually degrading quality (find a value in your 3d rendering setup that sets dpi!)

most probably. But check the Options in SaveAs dialog whether compression is enabled for bitmaps.

Default Thnak you very much, first of all!

ok the trick with printing is important!
but the manual doesn't show me any other operations. but also exporting to pdf's works smoothly!

hm... all my pics are in 72 dpi, when importing the first time thay are fine..but when updating occurs they become very loRes...strange but I can live with it!

reamins the big problem that I can't tell CDraw to search a specific folder, when the original file is moved. tha'ts a problem when bringing work from office to home,..etc...

but thanks again!

it is almost always possible to maintain the same subfolder structure.
If not, then you can use some free utilities that make NTFS-hardlinks thus emulating alternate path to the same file.
It can also make hardlinks to folders, so your folder can be accessed even through hardlinked folder on another drive.
Filesystem must be NTFS on source and target drive(s).

P.S.
I use NTFSlinks 1.2 for TotalCommander, assigned it to CtrlAltF5 inside of TC.
It is added via editing of TC's "start menu", specifiying "%L" "%T\" as 'parameters' and full path to ntfslinks.exe as 'execute program'

Default sorry

but corel ignores my subfolders constantly:

lets say i create a folder A, within i save my cdr file.
i create a folder B (in folder A). which contains my pics that i'm gonna link in my cdr file.

now i cut out my folder A, save it somewhere else on my disc...try to print:
corel ask me to for the pictures path. meanig of each single image!
nevertheless that tha the structure of subfolders is the same!

thanks,

Yes, I should say 'full file path' can be the same if you make a hardlink.

work: c:\work\folder\subfolder\myPic1.tif
home:
d:\portable\folder\subfolder\myPic1.tif
then you should create a folder c:\work and using ntfslinks create a ntfs-hardlink to d:\portable\folder - this will create a c:\work\folder which points to d:\portable\folder - thus all your paths will be the same as at another pc.

if you this is not handy then I guess the only way out is to write a macro that will reimport each of bitmaps retaining all of their properties from new folder specified.

Default Linked images update easier

Hi Lucas,

You're right that working with linked bitmaps is tedious by default. Too much manual updating and refreshing.

Try this code I requested to speed up the updating of all linked bitmaps throughout a multipage doc. (Thanks to help from Shelby).

Assign a toolbar button to it. The only thing for now is that you need to press "refresh entire list" in link manager to update the thumbnails. But files on Draw's page will be updated with macro.

Code:
Sub FixOutdatedLinkedBitmaps()
    Dim s As Shape
    Dim sr As ShapeRange
    Dim p As Page

    'Find all outdated linked bitmaps
    For Each p In ActiveDocument.Pages
        p.Activate
Set sr = p.Shapes.FindShapes(, cdrBitmapShape, True)
        For Each s In sr
            If s.Bitmap.ExternallyLinked = True Then
                    s.Bitmap.UpdateLink
            End If
            Optimization = True
        Next s
    Next p
    Optimization = False
End Sub
